Keeping Up

See Dale Carstensen’s comments below for what this icon means. I just want to surface it here.

Apple’s Mail.app sucks. I could give reasons, but it would only make me more tired than I already am from dealing with my storage issues. I just downloaded and set up Thunderbird for my Searls.com address to see if that works better. I’ve stayed away from Thunderbird since 2013, when it did real damage somehow. Things have changed. It looks a lot better now. [Later: but it crashed. Hmm.]

June Kim has a new post called The New Ad Layer. It’s original and interesting. Give it a read.

Dario says AI is in its adolescence. I think it’s more like infancy, and will be until we get our own. I also like most of what Matt Shumer says about it in Something Big Is Happening.

Richard M. Stallman gave a talk at Georgia Tech in January. Hard to make out what he’s saying since it’s recorded from the audience rather than the stage. Is there a better source of audio for it? Maybe one or more of you knows.

  1. I recently switched to Spark for my main email app on both iOS and macOS and am loving it. https://cagrimmett.com/2026/02/06/using-ai-for-email-triage/

    1. Can it handle the half-million emails in my collection, which goes back thirty years? That’s the issue with my current hosting provider, plus (on the client side) Mail.app, and (I jusgt discovered) Thunderbird?

I played a bit of the Talk video of RMS. On my chrome browser, a Live Caption window popped up immediately and was doing very well at getting what the host was saying. I forgot, if I ever knew, how chrome started doing Live Caption windows for me, but gemini just told me how to deal with it. 3 choices: 1. Settings->Accessibility should have a toggle for Live Caption; 2. chrome://flags should get to an entry via search with choices Default, Enabled or Disabled; or 3. once it is running (or maybe any audio is playing) a media control icon should show up near the right edge of the location bar. The icon for 3. is 3 musical staff lines with a note. Let’s see if an HTML img tag can show a facsimile of that icon:

And I’m sorry if recovery from your cataract surgery leaves you worse off with the Live Caption window than trying to hear via the distant microphone.

And I see the icon did not make it into the comment. The URL for that image is

so maybe that will survive. I think this third comment is my last on this topic.

    1. Thanks! I just put the image at the top of this post. Hope that makes sense. 🙂
