Purple Reign Ends

Prince, to the Mirror:

“The internet’s completely over. I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.

“The internet’s like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good.

“They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.”

Prince has never come up (ahem) short when the press needs a good breakout quote for a story. But I can understand his feelings on the matter. This is a guy who fought Warner Studios for literally years to regain control of his artistic license and the financial restitution that goes with it. A few years after he wins his battle in court, the entire distribution model went right out the window.
Maybe it’s for the best. With each newer release, his studio albums have declined a bit in their fire and color, but his live shows remain textbook examples of how to get people to move. Perhaps he should just go on tour until all this internet stuff disappears like all other fads do.

Quick–somebody relieve Prince of that mixing desk with all those numeric values running through it. Find him one that doesn’t use numbers, even on gain/volume dials. Better break some guitars and amps, too.

  3. That’s some serious, self-inflicted embarrassment for The Artist Formerly Associated Known as Relevant. Alas.
